HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS
Hurricane-Proof
the Windows
The easiest and most
effective way to protect windows and glass doors is to install storm
shutters. Building supply stores sell many kinds of storm shutters,
but these can be cost prohibitive. You can also make your own
storm shutters out of plywood at a fraction of the cost.
Let RM Renovations
come out ahead of the storm - we will measure each and every window
and pre-cut your plywood for you, installing the necessary hardware.
Each pre-cut plywood panel will be labeled with clear instructions
(i.e., living room window, writing side in, arrow meaning *this side
up*) so all you need to do is attach the plywood and evacuate.
Isn't peace of mind
what it's really all about? Did you know that usually, when a
hurricane takes the roof off, it's because the wind found its way
into the house via a broken window? Properly installed, these
pre-cut plywood panels will avert roofing losses.
Hurricane-Proof
the Doors
Most doors do not have bolts or pins strong enough to withstand
storm-force winds. The American Red Cross recommends installing
additional doorbolt materials (costing from $10 to $40). Garage
doors can be strengthened by installing horizontal bracing in each
panel. Bracing kits can often be purchased from garage door
manufactures. You may also need to add stronger supports and heavier
hinges for your garage doors. RM Renovations can handle this
for you as well.
These projects cannot
guarantee the safety of your home, but, if done correctly, they may
be able to minimize storm damage. For detailed instructions and
construction diagrams, see the American Red Cross brochure
